Among oil palm plantation practitioners, there has long been a belief that rainfall influences the ripening of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) and the number of loose fruits — fruits that drop before harvest. However, is this belief truly supported by strong scientific data? This study aims to answer that question systematically and quantitatively, separating myth from fact in the field.
The researchers collected daily rainfall data and correlated it with periodic observations of bunch ripeness levels and the number of fallen loose fruits in experimental plots. The extended observation period allowed the team to capture seasonal variations and eliminate confounding factors. Careful statistical analysis was applied to identify true cause-and-effect relationships rather than mere coincidental correlations.

The results confirmed that rainfall does have an effect, though the mechanism is more nuanced than commonly understood. Heavy rain occurring shortly after bunches reach optimal ripeness was shown to significantly increase the number of fallen loose fruits, likely through a combination of physical impact and increased humidity that accelerates the fruit abscission process. Conversely, prolonged dry periods tended to slow down bunch ripening and reduce early loose fruit drop. The effects varied between varieties and plantation topographical conditions.
